We Built GEO Into BlogBurst — Here's Why AI Search Visibility Is the Next SEO

Last week I ran our first GEO audit on BlogBurst. I asked AI platforms 9 different questions that our potential customers might ask. Questions like "best AI marketing tools for indie hackers" and "how to automate social media for a SaaS startup."

The result: 22% citation rate. 2 out of 9 queries mentioned us. And both were comparison queries where "BlogBurst" was already in the search term. For the queries that actually matter — where someone is looking for a solution without knowing our name — we got zero.

That number bothered me enough to build something about it.

What Is GEO and Why Should You Care

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is to AI search what SEO is to Google search.

When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best AI tool for managing social media," the AI pulls from its training data and web searches to recommend tools. If your product is not in that recommendation, you are invisible to a growing segment of users who never open Google anymore.

According to recent data, over 40% of product discovery searches now happen through AI chatbots. That number is climbing every month. If you are optimizing for Google but ignoring ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, you are fighting last year's war.

What We Found in Our First Monitoring Run

We built a monitoring system that queries AI platforms with keywords our customers would use. Here is what the data showed:

Query TypeExampleCited?
Comparison"BlogBurst vs Copy.ai for marketing"Yes, #1
Comparison"best BlogBurst alternatives"Yes, #1
Recommendation"best AI marketing tools for indie hackers"No
Recommendation"top AI social media platforms for solo founders"No
Informational"how to automate social media for startups"No

The pattern was clear: AI only mentions us when someone already knows our name. For discovery queries — where new customers come from — we are invisible. Meanwhile, Buffer, Hootsuite, HubSpot, and Jasper show up consistently.

How We Built the GEO Engine

Here is the thing — we already had most of the infrastructure. BlogBurst runs on a Thompson Sampling algorithm that learns what content gets the most engagement. We just needed to add a new reward signal.

The Algorithm Connection

Thompson Sampling is a multi-armed bandit algorithm. Think of it as an AI that pulls different slot machine levers (content formats, tones, posting times) and learns which ones pay out the most.

For social media, the "payout" is likes, replies, and follower growth. For GEO, the payout is AI citations. Same algorithm, different reward signal:

total_reward = 0.6 * social_engagement + 0.4 * geo_citation_score

We added two new bandit dimensions: content_format (narrative, listicle, Q&A, data-heavy, comparison) and data_density (low, medium, high). The algorithm now explores which combinations get cited by AI, not just which ones get likes on Twitter.

The Full Pipeline

Here is what runs automatically every day for each BlogBurst user:

  1. Monitor — Query AI platforms with your product's keywords. Check if you are cited, what rank, whether you are recommended.
  2. Learn — Extract patterns. "Q&A format gets cited 3x more." "Articles with specific numbers get cited more than vague claims." Store these as marketing memories.
  3. Generate — Content engine reads the GEO insights and generates content optimized for both social engagement AND AI citation. If there is a semantic gap (a query where you should appear but do not), it automatically creates content targeting that gap.
  4. Distribute — Publish across Twitter, Bluesky, Telegram, Discord, TikTok. Multiple platforms = multiple sources = higher AI trust.
  5. Repeat — 3-7 days later, check if the new content got cited. Update the bandit. The system gets smarter every cycle.

What Makes This Different from Manual GEO

Most GEO advice is "add structured data" and "use Q&A format." That is table stakes. It is like saying "use keywords" for SEO in 2010.

What we built is a self-learning GEO system:

  • It does not guess which format works — it tests and measures
  • It does not wait for you to identify gaps — it finds them automatically
  • It does not just optimize one article — it optimizes your entire content strategy
  • It compounds knowledge over time through marketing memories

After 30 days, the system knows which content formats get your product cited by AI, which queries are your biggest gaps, and which competitors are stealing your citations.

Early Results and What We Expect

It has only been running for a day, so I do not have before/after data yet. But based on our 78 users' data and 2,365 marketing memories, here is what the algorithm is already learning:

  • Content with specific numbers (e.g., "reduced posting time by 73%") gets cited more than vague claims
  • Q&A structured content is easier for AI to extract and quote
  • Multi-platform presence correlates with higher citation probability
  • Comparison content ("X vs Y") has the highest citation rate of any format

I will publish a follow-up with real data in 30 days.

Why This Matters for Solo Founders

If you are a solo founder, you cannot spend time manually optimizing for every AI platform. You cannot check ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini every week to see if they mention you. You cannot A/B test content formats for AI citation.

That is exactly what an autonomous agent should do. BlogBurst already handles your social media. Now it handles your AI visibility too.

GEO monitoring is available on the Pro plan. The full GEO optimization engine (auto-content, gap filling, bandit optimization) is on Business.

Or start free and see the social media side first. GEO is where this is heading — but good content on the right platforms is still the foundation.
